Originally constructed around 1860 this semi-detached dwelling in Morningside, Edinburgh was once part of a larger impressive Victorian villa-type dwelling which has since been divided, altered, and added-to. To the rear, a glass roof lean-to conservatory faces a sunny south-facing garden. The thermal performance of the existing space is very poor; resulting in heat-loss in winter and overheating in summer.
The glass and timber frame are removed and its flank and dado stone-faced walls are retained. A locally-sourced pine structure of posts, beams, and rafters, and an oak glazing are constructed in its place. Three large timber posts are placed around the existing layout and support the new flat roof construction.
The standing seam zinc frieze, column like timber posts, and delicate vertical timber window fenestration take reference from Morningside’s Victorian portico’s. The naturally stained green pine provides a rich and contrasting finish to the oak. Concealed solar-shading and an openable rooflight help regulate the temperature throughout the year.
