A series of interventions are made to a small 40m² flat in Edinburgh. The flat has been carefully reconfigured to increase the useable area and reorganise storage solutions. Partition walls have been removed and constructed to create a large open-plan living-dining space where natural light filters through.
The high ceilings are not taken for granted with sleeping spaces and storage raised to gain an additional 8m². Two mezzanine beds are constructed, a single and a double. This frees up the plan and allows for significant breathing space in the living areas.
The finishes are a refined selection — off-white chalk painted walls and floors, lime-waxed antique pine and oak details, and a series of rich toneful stones. The window sills are expressed by Dumfries Red, a rare Scottish natural conglomerate. The shower room has been detailed to the setting out of handmade white vertical tiling which accentuates its height. A reclaimed antique pine jacob’s ladder was refurbished—providing a playful route to the upper level.
