The conversion of a post-war bungalow into a two-storey dwelling was prompted by its leaking roof and poorly designed layout. The detached bungalow is situated around a series of similar typologies and an older two storey stone dwelling.
With an extremely limited budget, the focus was on a well-designed and efficient plan. The existing was retained where appropriate, the plan stripped back to create flexible rooms, and the circulation space reduced to a minimum. This was achieved by moving the entrance towards the centre of the plan and partially altering the internal layout—a refined solution to gain space.
This was in part a self-build project where the design was affordable and straightforward to construct. Timber trusses were specifically designed to the proposed 1st floor layout—significantly reducing the overall work.
